Current day Entrepreneurs
Hi,
The meaning of entrepreneurship is inventing some new concept. Is copying something and competing fall under the category of entrepreneurship?( Like Orkut has been followed by several networking websites). Does it really mean inventing something?
Also there are hundreds of software services companies across India. Do all these companies fall under the same category?
ICL has given way to IPL. According to me entrepreneurship involves starting a new concept in a particular region which does not currently exist. The 24- hour news channels got an idea from one channel.. All the channels are doing good though they are not the starters of the trend.
Some are leaders and some are followers. How many of you agree with me? Please comment.

what you said is absolutely correct, copying something exactly and giving it your own name is not entrepreneurship. However if you like someone else idea but you think that you can improve it a lot and make more meaningful, then starting your venture based on that idea is not wrong. Copying is a very old concept and evryone wants to take benefit of brand name, but still i dont agree with you as you have said ‘ starting a new concept does not exist”. There are many people who have given shape to new concepts, however they were copied soon. There has to be followers, because a leader cant be called leader if he doesnt have someone to follow him.

You have hit nail right on the head man. “All these copy n paste stuff, that we have become almost acustomed to in daily chores, is something which shall not work when it comes to finding out new ideas !”, and this is something which most people don’t understand. Look at BigAdda.com, the site started off with a bang but today it’s hits have reached rock bottom.
The key to being a good entrepreneur in my opinion is to have a view of a child who always looks around and learn something new from surroundings. And if we can bring that intutiveness into ourselves then sure one day we might find light of hope (aka funding:) for our ideas and who knows that idea might be the next big thing to happen to man kind.
And if we see around then all the successful enterprises are the ones that have build upon their product/service on an indigenious idea.

You guys are right, but still not right (kinda half-right).
Look… we have had many social networking sites which have been successful. EThe first major success was Friendster. And then came the bigdaddy MySpace, then bigmommy Facebook, then Bebo, then Orkut, then Hi5 and the rest (and not to mention then came all the crap that couldn’t survive).
Just notice the pattern. Friendster just improved an idea that SixDegrees had started in the late 1990s. Then came the whole array with slight improvements. They aren’t new ideas, but just improvements. So improving is a lot different than copying. Minglebox, Yaari, etc are copy of their counterparts because they didn’t improve the idea, but also they are bad copies (didn’t copy it fully)
Orkut, Hi5 and the rest had improved the idea. For example: Orkut’s clean User Interface is much better than MySpace’s cluttered UI and Facebook’s too-much-info pages. MySpace allowed profile page editing that Friendster didn’t allow.
This phenomenon isn’t new. Even Thomas Alva Edison improved on Alexander Graham Bell’s phone. Ford improved on Karl Benz’s car. The second and third inventors and the others to follow also made money. They too were successful.
So improvements *are* good *not copying*
