People of western countries actually love to see things from the angles they have been conditioned indirectly by their surroundings!!

Blood Diamond is a big hit why because it shows African Countries as these people think they are!
Same goes for Slum Dog , an average American would not be even aware about India's super achievements in I.T/Space but they all have heard about caste system and grave poverty.
This movie has been a shrewed business venture ?Think BBC,Timing of release and the psyche of average american you will agree indeed it was a totally business project at the cost of degrading image of an emerging nation.

But I m sure this will not stop people from coming to India if someone decides not to tour India because of this movie then it is cynical!!
Blog was a great read!

I absolutely agree with all what has been said above.I feel this movie depicts India in a wrong way ,the makers have tried to leverage attention of the public by portraying India as something which would sparkle the interest of the viewer and not what it actually is and in the meanwhile not concernedwith the fact how it could affect people's sentiments and also the perception as to how other people might look at India.
Alas it won many Oscars for what it shouldn't have.

I agree with you whole-heatedly. Slumdog Millionaire was seriously over-hyped. The movie was average and it absolutely did not deserve to win 8 Oscars. There are TONS of other movies in Indian cinema that are a hundred times better than Slumdog Millionaire but haven't even been nominated for the Oscars. I don't think the film won those Oscars all by itself, it was the amazing publicity and people's sympathy it gathered that made it win. I don't think there was one thing in the movie that made it deserve an Oscar, except maybe the music.

The plot? About average. The acting skills? Not really the best we've ever seen. The action? Virtually non-existent. The humor/comedy? Just about gets you through the film. Romance? Was there, but definitely lacked the chemistry that makes a great film. The music? The only good thing this film has to offer.

So on what basis did it get the 'Best Film' tag?

Other films that got 8 of the coveted awards include Gone With the Wind and My Fair Lady. Are we really comparing Slumdog Millionaire to these greats? You've got to be kidding me, it doesn't hold a candle to these 2 movies.

All on all,I think Danny Boyle is rather lucky to get away with an average film going unexpected places.
